These are scar which appear as a result of rapid stretching of the skin. They are commonly seen on the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, breasts and buttocks. Puberty and pregnancy are times in our lives when we expect to have strech marks however they may also occur during illness, if taking steroids or if very overweight. Stretch marks early on are red and raised then turn purpe before starting to fade and become flat and silvery.
Treatments aim to improve the appearance of stretch marks as they may not disappear.
